Raytheon Aligns with Academia to Develop IT Capabilities for Ocean Observatories Initiative

AURORA, Colo., July 3, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company's Intelligence and Information Systems (IIS) business has been selected as part of a University of California at San Diego (UCSD)-led team to design and construct information technology and networking capability for the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The program was awarded by the Joint Oceanographic Institutions, Inc.

Raytheon IIS will assist the UCSD team in creating the blueprint for a digital infrastructure that will allow ocean observatories to collect, process and transmit data 24/7.

The initial award is for $29 million over six years, with total funding reaching $42 million over the course of the 11-year project term. Raytheon's role is valued at nearly $2.5 million and includes the provision of systems engineering support to ensure consistency in the evolving Integrated Ocean Observing System architecture.

The OOI Cyberinfrastructure is the significant research component of the emerging Integrated Ocean Observing System and is the contributory element for the United States to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), a global initiative that will revolutionize the understanding of earth and how it works. Upon completion, GEOSS will help all nations involved produce and manage their information in a way that benefits the environment as well as humanity.

Historically, earth observation systems work in isolation, limiting the ability to analyze and understand the interaction of measurements of air, water, and land made on the ground, from the air, or from space. "By developing strategic working relationships with so many pre-eminent academic and research organizations, Raytheon is better positioned to be the Mission Systems Integrator of choice for the Integrated Ocean Observing System and GEOSS," stated Chuck Enoch, vice president of Space Systems for the Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems business. "The synergy driven by the confluence of enterprise-focused architecture engineering and cutting-edge research is an innovative and powerful force in environmental 'system of systems' development."

Other teammates include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the University of Southern California, Rutgers University, Boulder Real Time Systems, and Triad Project Management Services

Based in Garland, Texas, Raytheon IIS is a leading provider of information and intelligence solutions to the government. Raytheon IIS has annual revenues of approximately $2.6 billion and employs more than 8,000 engineering and technical professionals worldwide. Raytheon IIS recently achieved a strategic milestone in earning CMMI(R) (Capability Maturity Model Integration) Maturity Level 3 accreditation for the full model scope (System Engineering, Software Engineering, Integrated Product and Process Development, and Supplier Sourcing) across its enterprise.

Raytheon Company, with 2006 sales of $20.3 billion, is a technology leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. IoT & Smart Cities Stories
When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...

IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
