Intelligent Infrastructure Defined By @JamesCarlini | @ThingsExpo #IoT

There is a convergence of industries that were thought to be independent which are now interdependent

Global Net Superiority: Intelligent Infrastructure Defined

"In order to move forward in applying and maximizing new technologies, everyone involved in real estate, infrastructure, technology, and regional economic development needs to get on the same page in defining basic concepts like infrastructure." - James Carlini

Today, more organizations are looking at new technologies and applications for their operations. There is a convergence of industries that were thought to be independent which are now interdependent. What is missing is the ability to find common ground in definitions of infrastructure and other terminologies.

From the US Army Corps of Engineers' "Infrastructure and the Operational Art" Handbook:

The word infrastructure has many definitions, each tailored to the particular perspective of the author. Each is correct for the needs of the author, but in a broader, conceptual sense, multiple definitions taken together are necessary for a complete understanding. The U.S. Army states that infra-structure "is composed of the basic facilities, services, and installations needed for the functioning of a community or society" (U.S. Army 2012a)

The US Army Corps of Engineers' Handbook goes further and states that the Department of Homeland Security in the National Infrastructure Protection Plan uses a broader definition:

The framework of interdependent networks and systems comprising identifiable industries, institutions (including people and procedures), and distribution capabilities that provide a reliable flow of products and services essential to the defense and economic security of the United States, the smooth functioning of government at all levels, and society as a whole. Consistent with the definition in the Homeland Security Act, infrastructure includes physical, cyber, and/or human elements" (Department of Homeland Security 2009). James Carlini, taking a business-focused approach, defines infrastructure as "a platform for commerce and economic growth" (Carlini 2009)

A Platform for Commerce
Yes, the US Army of Engineers has referenced my definition of infrastructure as it pertains to understanding the "Platform for Commerce" and its impact on regional economic viability.

As further defined in my book, LOCATION LOCATION CONNECTIVITY, the framework first developed for my white paper, "Intelligent Infrastructure: Securing Regional Sustainability", for the US Department of Homeland Security (2009) defines all the layers of infrastructure built up in the last 5,000 years with the latest layer focusing on Broadband Connectivity. It is important to understand.

It is critical to adopt a standard definition in order to move forward to build more critical elements of intelligent infrastructure and be able to communicate with those in different disciplines to move the whole economy forward.

Cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G Networks, and other buzzwords will not materialize successfully if the supporting infrastructure is not solid.

Visualizing Intelligent Infrastructure
When we take a look at new components of infrastructure from a real estate perspective, we need to understand "Intelligent Amenities." (See Chart 1)

Chart 1: Sample Menu of Intelligent Amenities

Amenity

Description

Acceptance

Power & Telecom

Redundancy

Elimination of single failure points.

Becoming more of a given and not a "hoped for" amenity.

Broadband Connectivity

High bandwidth (1Gbps or more, today 10Gbps, tomorrow 40Gbps), multiple carriers, multiple access points

More and more want this. For technology campuses besides speed, diversity in carriers, and connectivity into NLR via Starlight

Power

Pre-planned layouts and capabilities, multiple providers and power grids

This is becoming part of the upfront Master Planning process instead of an afterthought.

Alternative Energy Source

Besides power from another substation or grid, a third-party provider or an on-campus alternative. Peaker Plant or Windmills (Wind turbines generating power)

Diversity of Power source has become a critical issue from several standpoints: Security as well as Compliance issue. Also from a Green Building perspective for renewable energy capabilities.

Services & Support

Description

Acceptance

(Master Planning)

Upfront Coordination

Quick development process .that includes coordination of all municipal planning issues, adherence to building codes, etc.

New concept but effective in selling to tenants wanting a rapid development process not hindered by municipal issues.

(Master Planning)

"Network Tailor" Instead Of A "Network Jailor"

Custom-tailored network infrastructure. Not an "off-the-rack solution" or a "one-size-fits-all" approach.

A new concept of tailoring bandwidth and broadening choices of carrier services to the demands of tenants.

(Continual Support)

Common Campus Response Team Services

Group of diverse service providers including power and network carriers as well as companies like AT&T, CISCO and other support services

A new concept gaining ground as well as popularity. The concept of "one-stop shopping" being morphed into "one-stop supporting" after the tenant is in place and is part of the campus.

You must understand the changes, additions to, and new priorities of infrastructure in order to plan, design, and implement the complex intelligent infrastructure framework supporting the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as private and public clouds.

The "Platform for Commerce" is what the future is built upon.

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How? Overwhelmingly, even as enterprises have adopted cloud computing and are expanding to multi-cloud computing, IT leaders remain concerned about how to monitor, manage and control costs across hybrid and multi-cloud deployments. It’s clear that traditional IT monitoring and management approaches, designed after all for on-premises data centers, are falling short in ...
