OT and Ficosa Reveal an Emergency Call System for the Russian Automotive Market at MWC 2014

Oberthur Technologies, a world leader in digital security solutions for the mobility space, and Ficosa an automotive parts and systems supplier, will demonstrate at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, a complete emergency call system for the automotive Russian market (ERA GLONASS¹).

The ERA GLONASS system is the Russian equivalent of the European eCall system. The ERA GLONASS regulation is planned to be implemented in Russia from January 2015.

According to studies of the National Entity of Russian Navigation (NISS) it is intended to reduce emergency services’ time-to-arrival by up to 30%, saving up to 4,000 additional lives every year.

The emergency system inside the vehicle consists of a telematic unit (iVTU, in Vehicle Telematic Unit) that incorporates a special SIM card (DIM® ERA GLONASS) as well as a user interface module (HMI).

The system allows, with the DIM® ERA GLONASS installed in the telematic module made by FICOSA, to have a GLONASS profile for the emergency call and a commercial profile for telematic services. The swap of the profile is made in few seconds in accordance with local regulations.

FICOSA, as a top-tier provider in the automotive industry, and Oberthur Technologies a world leader in digital security solutions for the mobility space will show this innovation on the CLARA platform (HMI and telematic systems) with DIM® ERA GLONASS.

“The safety systems and emergency services are fundamental to save lives on the road. As suppliers of components for automotive, all the technology that makes reference to move forward in this field is our focus. The governments have the last word for the systems implementation as ERA GLONASS or eCALL. Our work is to anticipate of their regulations, giving support to the entities that define them and taking part actively in the configuration of the solutions. CLARA is the result not only of the definition of the system, but the demonstration of its functionalities. This work is possible thanks to the good position of FICOSA in the M2M (Machine to Machine) market with its technological patents and the collaboration with other strategic industrial partners such Oberthur Technologies”, in words of Mr. Josep Maria Forcadell, Director of the Advanced Communications Unit of FICOSA.

“Car telematic services and emergency systems will offer majors benefits to drivers around the world and in Russia in particular. OT provides innovation matching worldwide regulations. The DIM® ERA GLONASS has been specifically designed to facilitate the implementation of these innovative services by mobile networks operators, car makers and telematic service providers. The DIM®ERA GLONASS combined with the CLARA platform from Ficosa is helping the entire industry moving forward” said Edward Simonet, M2M Business Director at OT. “

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of S...

The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
