Mobile Commerce News Weekly – Week of January 26, 2014

The Mobile Commerce News Weekly is an online newsletter made up of the most interesting news, articles and links related to mobile commerce and marketing, mobile payments, mobile money, e-wallets, mobile banking, mobile ads and mobile security that I run across each week.  I am specifically targeting market size and market trend information.

Market research firm TNS revealed that 53 percent of respondents in Metro Manila already own a smartphone. For 2014 research firm IDC predicts smartphone adoption will see a 22 percent year-on-year increase in the country. This will lead to an increase in m-commerce transactions and app usage among Filipinos.  Read Original Content

Google has bought UK start-up DeepMind for a reported £400m, making the artificial intelligence firm its largest European acquisition so far. The artificial intelligence company specializes in algorithms and machine learning for e-commerce and games.  Read Original Content

MEF released the first report in its Global Consumer Insights Series on Mobile Money that analyzed data from 10,000 respondents in 13 countries.  In 2013, 15 percent of mobile media users made some form of mobile payment to make a purchase. The largest group of these users (seven percent of the total sample) did so via a mobile wallet.  Read Original Content

The Royal Bank of Canada has released its first mobile commerce platform, called the RBC Wallet. The platform is powered by the bank’s Secure Cloud.  The bank claims its mobile wallet is the first of its kind in Canada, allowing consumers to choose either their debit RBC account or a Visa credit account to make payments.  Read Original Content

Judo, a leading mobile commerce firm based in the United Kingdom, has launched a new website called judoHub. The website is devoted to providing businesses with information concerning mobile payments and how they can engage consumers with smartphones and tablets.  Read Original Content

According to QRCodePress, in the last quarter of 2013 approximately 65 percent of marketing emails were opened on a tablet or smartphone. When compared to the third quarter of that year, this was an increase of four percent. Read Original Content

According to a recent report by Movable Ink, mobile marketing is taking off with potential, as a tremendous number of Americans use their smartphones and tablets to check their emails. The research showed smartphones are used to open emails 48.23 percent of the time and tablets are used for opening emails 16.52 percent of the time.  Read Original Content

Continuing on its buying jag, Yahoo acquired mobile-marketing company Sparq.
Sparq lets users switch between apps on their smartphones and could be enticing to marketers because it is said to drive people's app usage. Read Original Content
